My little goldfish pond..The part on the left is a pre-molded pond kit and the part on the right is a round garden tub! There are 9 various-sized goldfish and plenty of plants. The pond is under a lot of shade trees, so I have a large shade-cloth about 8 feet above the pond to keep out the leaves. The water is crystal clear and I have never put in any chemicals!

Plant coverage of 40-50% is ideal for full sun (water lilies, hyacinths, sensitive plant, frogs bit, variegated four leaf clover) things like that that provide? some shade.

I think the shade and having plants are the biggest factors. The shadecloth stays up year round and at night the pond lights make the whole effect truly awesome! Let me hear from you again if you do put your pond in the shade. Stay away from chemicals if you have fish! No chemical has ever been in my pond! Good luck!
