Make a hanging planter out of wood
Posted by: stevinmarin
Video duration: 252 seconds
Simple hanging planter made out of redwood. Easy to make, just cut a gazillion strips of wood and cut notches in each one. If you don't have a dado stack, you could make the joints using a router. Or, to make this really easy, just glue or nail the strips together without making joints!

You forgot to tell? us how to build a house to hang the planters on.
By: MHAUSMAN. on 26 May 12, 19:05:55
This also makes a great earthquake monitor. When you experience an earthquake the planter will swing wildly perhaps striking the house to? wake you up. This will also work well to detect high winds in the area. Seriously, great idea, Thanks.

he mentioned that in a previous video. the tablesaw is? new and is really quiet indeed

Seeing that you stepped the tiers 1/4 each time, personally i would have dado'd the other side by moving the fence 1/4, that way you would have a greater glue area when stacking the layers But nice simple project ;)?

I? don't know if it was edited but that table saw is quiet.

6$ for Redwood?? Really? That seems really cheap. I thought Redwood was super expensive. You can do some really beautiful stuff with Redwood (exterior chairs, tables, etc).

Good job man. My only complaint is? that music!!!

To me, "glued up"? has always referred to the entire process while "gluing together" refers to gluing individual pieces together.

Love the basting brush for the glue!?

Wood glue is stronger than you might think. The joints? it creates are actually stronger than the wood itself. His solution will work perfectly for the application. PS: Love your videos Steve!
By: Planetdaz68. on 26 May 12, 00:50:30
"Glued up" is correct. It's a part of the? vernacular among wood workers.
By: 20RoyalSuperKing. on 26 May 12, 00:16:45
Also, would it be easier to make, plan and cut all the rebates/routes before you rip them boards? into strips. That must be 144 double dado cuts you made on them when it could have been 16. And if you ripped them down a little thiner to fit your dado you would have had 8-16 more strips to play with. Like your vids though mate.

Lovely little cheap and cheerful? planters. Reckon I'll be knocking some up for my lady friend this weekend! If you wanted to spice them up a bit, you could twist each successive layer by an equal amount, to get a nice spiral effect.
By: TheHowlingMan177. on 25 May 12, 22:54:11
I tend to agree, i don't think just the? glue by itself will hold up over time in an outdoors situation.
