The key is choosing mics well, positioning them well, and EQing them well. First, get a mic designed for a kick drum for the back and a mic designed for a snare or hi-hat for the front. Second, experiment with positioning to find the sweet spot.? Finally, roll of the lows of the front mic while accenting the highs... and give the back mic a low boost for the thump! You do see a lot of drummers with mixers, and I have a very cheap, very small mixer by Behringer on hand for those that need it. But with our usual setup, it's not necessary. The stereo output goes to the FOH console for pre-amp and from there is routed to IEMs and the house mix. I might do a video sometime on our live IEM setup. It's pretty? complex but worth the effort to set up! ohh... okay... very ... It takes a stereo mini-plug (1/8" jack) and turns it into two RCA plugs. We then use another adaptor to turn those into 1/4" plugs (like you'd use with an acoustic guitar). You can plug one into a direct box to go to the crowd. The other one feeds into our in-ear monitor system. (Actually, both end up going through the FOH console into our IEM system, but only one ends up in speakers.) hmmm.. yes.. but ... For example, my M-Audio ProjectMix I/O has eight XLR inputs and four line-level outputs, as well as headphones.
