While millions of Americans will cast ballots for president on November 4, their votes do not directly send one of the candidates to the White House. In this segment of How America Elects, VOA's Jeffrey Young explains that the selection of the president is actually done by the Electoral College.

First off, it's improper to call an entire population ignorant on foreign affairs. Second, does the Roman Empire mean anything to you? Monarch (emperor) and Republic (senate). This message brought to? you by: Americans
By: macarion. on 22 May 12, 19:22:55
"tell me what part of my comment I declare democracy? and republic to be mutually exclusive" There would be no reason for you to leave that comment if you weren't trying to? counter the video's claims about democracy. "and at what part I elect for the removal of the electoral college?" I didn't say you did. You seem really confused.
By: RaiuTree. on 22 May 12, 19:14:35
Clearly, many people are interpreting my comment different than I had intended; so, if you would please, tell me what part of my comment I declare democracy and republic to be mutually exclusive, and at what part I elect for the removal? of the electoral college?
By: RaiuTree. on 22 May 12, 19:10:43
I really hope you're joking. America is "defined" to be a democratic republic. My comment, which everyone seems to mis-read, merely demonstrates a way in which we can see that this definition is applicable.? Also "republic," in this context, more accurately defined as "A state in which the governmental power is exercised by representatives chosen (directly or indirectly) by the body," than your definition, whichh is the one used when a nation is called "The Republic of [Whatever]"
By: redhaven901. on 21 May 12, 07:34:48
By that logic, European countries are republics too? Fuck no. Some of them are monarchs but they are democratic. No. Your definition is called? representative democracy. Idiot. Republic means that it's a form of government that isn't ruled by a monarch. Do you Americans really know what the world is like outside the US?
By: jmac217x. on 18 May 12, 06:58:29
That's fucking shit. Outdated systems fall apart. Look around...?
By: ComedyStanCam. on 18 May 12, 00:45:55
Because Large States would get mad (thus the Connecticut Compromise). At first that Contradicts what I states earlier when I think States are equal. However, since CA, TX, and NY have large populations (70 million Combines, almost 1/3 of population) candidates? would invest heavily there. More people have a larger say in Congress and Laws passed, but does that mean the country only focuses on CA's 55 seats as opposed to 435 representational seats? No!
By: macarion. on 17 May 12, 22:11:20
So why don't we get? rid of the house of representatives, since states are represented (somewhat) proportionally there?
By: ComedyStanCam. on 17 May 12, 21:43:17
When a State is admitted to the Union, they have the same rights? as all the other's.
By: macarion. on 17 May 12, 10:38:25
So Wyoming's "vote" will? be equal to California's, even though CA has 66 times the population of WY?
By: ComedyStanCam. on 16 May 12, 22:51:09
I think that everyone votes, and when 1 candidate gets the majority? of votes in 1 state, that state goes to that candidate, and that state counts as a "vote". I know it's similar to the electoral college, but the thing is, is that electors can't vote for somebody else. The fact that they can do that means the President is elected by bureaucrats. The votes states have will not be by a human but by a majority. And each state will have one say. And in a 25/25 situation, Territories can vote.
By: C3gee. on 16 May 12, 19:30:38
THIS IS GREAT FOR MY POLITICAL SCIENCE FINAL THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING!!!!!!!!!?
By: macarion. on 15 May 12, 06:51:15
The terms "democracy" and "republic" aren't mutually exclusive. No one's talking about direct democracy here. Clearly, America uses a form of representative democracy. Getting rid of the electoral college wouldn't change that, and it wouldn't change the fact that we're a constitutional republic. A president? is still a representative.
By: kyrudo. on 15 May 12, 05:07:53
I live? in Puerto Rico. You know what were doing to vote? We're moving into the US, lol :D and stealing yer jobs.
By: RaiuTree. on 14 May 12, 08:34:29
which is why we are a republic; "democratic" is the adjective.? Meaning: yeah, you can vote, but still, a representative of you is the one who decides what happens
By: macarion. on 07 May 12, 05:11:26
With a popular vote? system, every state would have the proper amount of representation. No, it's not true that candidates would only focus on big cities. If that were true, why don't they already do that? Why don't they already focus on the biggest cities in swing states (Miami, Philadelphia, Cleveland), and ignore everyone else? Also, the physical presence of a candidate in a city is basically irrelevant. It's the 21st century. We have TV and the internet now.
By: MrRobertHastings. on 06 May 12, 21:18:44
The electoral college was designed so that each state would have some representation, no matter how small. To do away with it and have a mass popular vote would be a catastrophe; what remains of state's rights would vanish overnight as they would no longer control who governs them, and Presidential Candidates would only campaign in large urban concentrations, you know, Chicago, New York, LA, etc. I urge you? all to make an informed decision about the electoral college... once you know the facts.

how do you make your videos, i mean like what programs do you? use and what OS?
By: prath000002. on 05 May 12, 09:02:20
good way to look at it mathematically, but? truly your vote only counts if you live in a swing state.
