After nearly five decades of war, the Colombian government appears to have dealt a major blow to FARC, the Marxist rebel group. Defence ministry sources said the group's top commander, Alfonso Cano, was killed in a military raid on Friday. Cano, who became FARC's leader in 2008, had a $5m bounty on his head. Al Jazeera's Roger Wilkison reports.

The Colombian rebel group, the FARC, announced last week that it intends to release the last of its captives and stop kidnapping for ransom. For the families of 10 people currently in FARC custody, the declaration has provided new hope. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo, who spoke to the family of the longest held captive in Colombia, reports from Bogota.
