Carl Perkins - Matchbox

Video duration: 148 seconds

This song is based on Blind Lemon Jeffersons "Matchbox Blues". Most of the lyrics were improvised spontaneously by Carl Perkins during the recording, as he didn't knew Jeffersons Song. Jerry Lee Lewis is playing piano on this song.

Leave it to you brits to do an outstanding rocker. We Yanks should take? a lesson and get with it!!!
By: RockinRedRover. on 09 May 12, 00:34:05
Many of us are still enjoying the ride since the first one, climbaboard? there's still some room ! (Shame the pegs don't fit and my hair takes a lot less time to comb !!)

Agreed & fact, well said. Todays younger folk esp in USA think rockabilly is some wild insane 3piece combo garage thrash, fact is listen to a lot of the originals and its more laid back country = listen to the Perkins band for perfect example. Yes Matchbox were "diverted" by the big record companies and what they thought would sell, but hey they were consistent UK Top Sellers! while in the USA there was NOTHING at all; like 60s r'n'b the US needed British bands? to remind them of their own roots!

WHAT! But when this was produced (and yes it's a "commercial" record for a wide audience, thats what happens when BIG record companies get involved with TALENTED authentic bands, as Graham & the guys were/are) the UK and Europe were full of rockabilly bands, the good ol USA? had NONE, zilch, ZERO. Why did all the original US artists (Perkins, Haley, etc) have to come to the UK & Europe to get recognition in the 70s/80s ?. The Stray Cats only formed to cash-in on what we'd been doing for years?

Not real Rockabilly but much closer to real rockabilly than most punk bands they call rockabilly today. Rockabilly means? hillbilly-rock so it needs a country sound to be called rockabilly.

Studied this band further and have come to the conclusion that the words? chosen in the previous comment not quite right. This band have produced some really brilliant tracks their work is a powerful style brought about by high quality music they play. If nothing they have brought an awareness of this style of music and have gone further and added their very high quality instrument playing, so plundering raping not really, still not sure how it all sits with rockabilly but hey they are awesome!

A rich concoction of high quality music in a very dynamic exciting beat..can't help thinking it is? plundering raping the authentics of rockabilly to create a genre of inauthentic but highly commercial music

If you were to listen to proper rockabilly (not this rubbish) you might be surprised how well the mix of country music and rock and roll go together. I agree with what you say - but it's because you're looking here at the genre at it's very cheesiest which is not a proper representation of it at all. Try some better stuff and you'll here how the two genres mix well togetrher. You might think of it more in terms of rock and roll mixed with hillbilly rather than country? if that helps.
By: ibuprofen303. on 18 Apr 12, 21:54:35
Haha - it is almost like? a rockabilly version of shawaddywaddy isn't it. I can just hear Jimmy Saville announcing them ...
By: ibuprofen303. on 18 Apr 12, 21:52:25
British = better psychobilly bands. American = better rockabilly? bands.
By: ibuprofen303. on 18 Apr 12, 21:51:41
Yes you? can. American Rockabilly.
By: ibuprofen303. on 18 Apr 12, 21:49:01
sorry "real" not "reral" -? typo.
By: ibuprofen303. on 18 Apr 12, 21:48:35
Yeah man, it sounds like a cross between Bucks Fizz and some very badly done country music. Hasn't got much to do with the reral rockabilly? sound.
By: ibuprofen303. on 18 Apr 12, 21:44:21
Yeah I agree, what makes it funnier is the lyrics "I'm a rockabilly rebel" - haha I wonder whether they get the irony??
By: ibuprofen303. on 18 Apr 12, 21:43:22
Yeah I? agree man. Not keen on this at all. Never really rated matchbox as a proper rock and roll band. They just sound... silly, like a novelty band or something. Compare them to the Stray Cats or similar, no contest.
