Gemini Observatory

Here is a time-lapse movie of the Gemini North observatory during a Laser Guide Star (LGS) run, taken from the catwalk around the outside of the UH 2.2 meter telescope. LGS creates an 'artificial star' which is used as a reference source for adaptive optics systems on Gemini instruments. Directly behind the Gemini Observatory is the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT).

By the way, this? one has been demolished and construction has started on an observatory twice as big.

Thanks mate, same to you. The local Land Planning Authority was very accommodating and approval wasn't? too difficult.

My problem here is the remote nature of my observatory yet its proximity to Dallas-Ft Worth. Most folks think it is just a well house which is fine to me. Having it in your front yard is a great idea just as? long as city codes allow it.

That is a great reason! I often just enjoy the joy of doing a project more than just finishing it. Sometimes, I get a bit down when the work is done? and I start looking for an upgrade or a new project. Clear Skies to you :)

Mind you, it IS? in the FRONT yard, so ALL the neighbours can see it. Besides, no one needs to steal, they can just knock on the door and ask to come have a look anytime they see the red light on.

Canberra is not so bad for this kind of crime, but at the end of the day, insurance is really all you can do. If criminals? want to get into your house, most security won't stop them if they are determined.

G'day mate. I do all this work because I enjoy it. I like to set myself a goal, then go out and achieve it. Sure, there? are easier designs out there, but I love the idea of designing and building my own professional observatory dome, putting all my experience into achieving a fully operational and attractive building.
By: timberwoofy. on 09 May 12, 05:30:54
I? really like your observatory. I just wonder why you did all this work for a harder to build more expensive project rather than one of the simpler designs, e.g., a roll off roof design which works very well and cost little to build? I would add that your design and finished product is like a fine piece of artwork, a Jaguar instead of a Honda Civic. Where I live, it is advantageous not to advertise to all who happen by that "here is a building with lot's of expensive equipment inside."

Thanks mate, keep your eye out? on my videos and ASIGN Observatory II dot webs dot com for the new build!

WOW, really enjoyed watching it all come together. What a wonderful design? and accomplishment!

- I look forward to seeing your progress. I think a lot? about building a small observatory for my C11, but there isn't a really good spot for it on the property without talking the neighbors into cutting down their ugly overgrown crab apple tree. lol

That's OK, there was a season where? it was needed and served it's purpose. If the new one gets approved, it too, will serve a purpose and I am sure it will be grand!
By: CmdrGendoIkari. on 11 Jun 11, 22:18:43
- Kinda sad to know you tore it down after all that work. It looked pretty good to me.? I hope you were able to sell or donate the dome at least.
By: barryarmstead. on 13 May 11, 00:36:25
The dome is now demolished and a new one is about to be? built in it's place. The new one will be nearly twice as big and of all steel construction.

@mrtapoche1 thanks mate. I had a lot of help from friends,? family, neighbours and the good Lord. Everyone did their bit and contributed toward the final result!

It cost me a year of blood, sweat and tears. Most of it was from recycled materials, but the fibreglass resin was over $600 alone. Not to mention tool costs, glues, nails, etc etc..It all adds up, but over a year it's? not so bad.
By: AstrophysisistJulz. on 09 Dec 10, 09:23:38
Woah! Awesome.. how much did the dome alone cost??
By: IzzyIsou. on 08 Apr 10, 02:06:22
