I would think that a ply wood would? be stonger for this purpose as the layers of wood are glued together with the wood grain alternating each layer, making it stronger. If the gap is too big, it requires too much force to get a sound out of it. When I made mine, I did have to make a few adjustments of the size of the gap by sanding back the front surface of the box. i have a question ... I have to fiddle with the adjustment to minimise slight buzzing from the snare when playing the bass part of the drum. In mine they are about 12cm long. It is recessed into the upper corners of the drum: I recessed it about 9mm. Make a matching triangular piece to attach to the top corners of the INSIDE of the drum face. When the drum face is in place, you really only want about a 1mm gap between the two triangle pieces. I was just curious ...
